this photograph: |
Another view down a deep canyon, with more clement weather this time though. But, as you can see from the sky and the mountains hiding under low clouds, it wasn't *that* great - in fact, we got a couple of inches of snow overnight...
This is a view of the famous Shafer Trail - about five miles long, it takes you down deep below the rim of Canyonlands National Park and, as you might guess from this shot, it's not for the faint-at-heart. Compared to other unpaved roads, it's almost a highway though (as long as it's dry), but you do want a high-clearance, four-wheel drive. I have seen normal passenger cars on it, but I don't think it's a good idea. You'd probably have a lot of explaining to do when returning it to the rental company. ;o)
To give you an idea of the size, look about 1/3 down on the right side and you'll spot a car.
Stitched from two vertical photos (gee, I'm starting to love that stitching software that came with the camera!). |

Hi my dear,
me again, stalking you... ;) Vertigo is the right title here! I have no problems with height, but that winding road makes me dizzy! Wonderful photo with wonderful levels of the road that gets very small and very far away....

Hi, Claudia -
You mean people drive down that thing? Once my heart stops pounding, I can see it's a great shot, no clue it was stitched, and the car does give a sense of scale.
The oranges seem a bit over-saturated to me; might be the new monitor, which I'm still adjusting.
Best,
Dan |

Yup, lots of people drive down that thing, although I've watched some turn around after a couple of miles... I've done it, too, but with a high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive, after many dry days, and making sure to take my time. It's fun as long as you're not afraid of heights and don't get careless.
I don't think the oranges are over-saturated - the soil there really IS red and I've found that the colour often seems stronger under cloudy skies.
Thanks,
Claudia

Hi Claudia,
Nicely positioned to capture the road/trail curvature into the canyon bowels, and a good road to explore off the tourist path.
I drove my pickup truck down Shafer Trail many moons ago. The highlights besides closeup views of the differing layers of geology, was a narrow arch one can walk across over the precipice, big horn sheep, and the sinewy Colorado River at the bottom.
thanks for sharing,
Ray |

Hello
Good stitch. Impressive point of view.
Just one remark with stitching you generally loose the foreground and in this case you lost a little the part that will take the eye from your feet to the bottom of canyon.
Best regards

There are definitely some situations where you have to stitch, so a good stitching program can be an essential bit of kit. It has worked out very well. This is a dramatic image and I can only guess at how you got it. Were you laid flat on your belly? Well done
For more drama have you driven down the Moki Dugway?

Thanks for the nice comment. I was actually leaning over a fence made out of very thick logs - and I was sure glad it was there... ;o)
I have driven the Moki Dugway several times - but it's a major highway compared to Shafer Trail!
Best,
Claudia

Ciao Claudia,
great comprehensive shot of the Shafer Trail. I know zip, zero, nothing about stitching, but I can't find anything in the picture that points in that direction, so... I wouldn't know if you didn't tell. Which means you did a very good job at it, simple as that. A shot that looks awesome and feels awesome, my compliments.
Have a nice evening, and thanks for showing up in Jerome! HUGS,
Fulvio. |

Have fun. See ya later,
F. blueraven wrote in 2010/05/17 09:15:08: Hi Fulvio,
Thanks, but - to be honest - my stitching software did 99.9% of the job, so I won't take the "blame" for that. I was actually amazed at how good the stitched shot was - all I had to do was tell the software what to do - and think of taking two vertical images at this location in the first place. Hmm, I guess I WILL take a little bit of the blame for it then. ;o)
Thanks for stopping by - always a pleasure to read your comments!
Hugs

Hi Claudia
The stitching has done a great job of providing a solid panoramic view of this area. This is why most people choose to photograph Canyonlands from the top and not venture down. Nice colour and detail.

Hi Claudia,

blueraven wrote in 2010/05/17 04:54:10: Hi Mark,

Outsch. |

Good morning Claudia.
To be honest, scares me the sight of this tiny car. Jast terrifying sight of huge boulders and unstable hanging over the winding road. I would definitely recommend here for good, off-road car with four-wheel drive. In another situation when the weather is deteriorating, then ride it's suicide ...
Picture does impress. By sewing two shots You got a very good picture quality. These colors, the contrasts and light - all delights.
Greetings from continue rainy Poznan,

Hallo Claudia!

Hello Claudia,
What a cool shot - and a great stitch - I can see why you might like his function! The "road" makes this more than a grand view, giving the shot an element of narrative - much aided by the inclusion of the vehicle. Like some little mite navigating it's way into an ear.
Cheers
